Wallace K. Harrison, designer of the United Nations building, is hired to consult with Los Angeles area architects for the building of the Los Angeles Opera House and War Memorial Auditorium.

POLITICS

The Marshall Plan introduces a large amount of U. S. dollars into circulation in Europe, establishing the dollar as the world unit of account.
Test Pilot, Chuck Yeager breaks the Sound Barrier becoming the first pilot to ever do so.
The Dead Sea Scrolls are discovered
Secretary of State, George C Marshall unveils what becomes known as "The Marshall Plan".  This program was designed to aid in the rebuilding of the aftermath of the war.
Jewish refugees from WWI, aboard the "Exodus" and attempting to reach Palestine are turned back by the British
