MUSIC

7th Annual Los Angeles Bach Festival is held.  Arthur Leslie Jacobs conducting
Ezio Pinza performs "Don Juan" for the LA Opera.  His performance rates him as the "oiliest and trickiest" to perform the role at that time.   
Col. W. De Basil's original Ballet Russe performs at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Auditorium.

POLITICS

Although still officially neutral, the United states declares an embargo against American made war supplies being sold and sent to Japan.
The Battle of Britain, a conflict between Germany and Britain over air superiority begins 
Leon Trotsky is assassinated in Mexico after being ousted by the Communist party and living in exile
Stone Age Cave Paintings are found in the area of Lascaux, France, which show pictorial images of animals consistent with fossils found in the area.
On the orders of Stalin, over 4000 Polish soldiers are captured, massacred and buried in mass graves in the Katyn forest after the Soviet Union invades Poland in support of the Nazis.
