Pearl Buck releases "The Good Earth"

MUSIC

4th Annual Bach Festival is held.  John Smallman conducting.  Smallman dies that year while conducting.  The baton is passed to his assistant and the concert continues to its finale, after which, the death of the festival founder is sadly announced to the performers and audience.

POLITICS

The Sino-Japanese War starts with troops of the Japanese imperial Army invading Manchuria.  The Chinese American citizens of Los Angeles held a Moon Festival to raise relief funds for China.  In the San Pedro Harbor, many Chinese Americans marched to protest the United States sending scrap metal to Japan over the stringent objections of the Chinese government, who had requested an embargo against Japan.
Roosevelt begins his second term
General Motors is hit with a strike, which spreads to six states and pulls thousands off of the production lines.
John D Rockefeller appoints William S Farish to head Standard oil as its CEO and President.
The Ohio River overflows its banks swamping huge areas along its course 
Joseph Kennedy, Sr., is named U S Ambassador to Great Britain.  sons Joseph Jr. and John work under their father as international reporters.
The United States first foreign trade zone, identified as Staten island, located in the City of New York, opens its doors
A strike against the Chrysler Motor Company puts over 60,000 workers off of the production lines.
The first United States Social Security claims are paid.
Britain and Italy sign the Mediterranean agreement
Goering orders the organization of emigration of Jews still residing in Germany
Hitler demands return of German colonies
Hitler formally abrogates the Treaty of Versailles
