Hamburg bark RALEIGH, O. P. Nielsen, master, arrived at New York on Sunday, 11 June 1854 (passenger manifest dated 12 June), 40 days from Hamburg, with merchandise and 216 passengers, fell in with the British bark BRITTON, from Charleston bound to Liverpool, 14 days out, in a sinking condition, having on the morning of the 31st May, at 3 o'clock, in a dense fog, struck an iceberg; took from her the captain, officers and crew and brought them to this port. During the summer months the Northern Atlantic route was taken and the Southern route was used during the winters months due to the winter storms on the Atlantic.
