Thanks to the efforts of Jesse Lay, Gordon Lay and many others, we now can take this family back further to North Carolina. This is not documented yet, but it does match much of what has been found in the census to date. This particular branch of the family is huge and covers several areas of Tennessee. This section is going to eventually be so huge that it will comprise several pages.

Much of this comes from the book: "Lay Family Descendants" by Jesse Patrick Roberts, and covers the line of the Rev. Jesse Coleman Lay, a Baptist minister in rural Tennessee, as was his son, Rev William L. Lay. If anyone wishes to obtain a copy of this book, contact me and I'll forward it to the Lay Family Genealogical Association leader.

Here is a quote from the book by J. Gilbert Lay regarding the history of the Lay family: ""In Anglo-Saxon, English rendering of the name, it was el de Lay. But like the Scotch-Irish version, it too has been modified or abbreviated to "Lay". It, to the English, means "Of a lea or meadow." From the German version we get it spelled Ley, while from the French we get Lay, Laye, Laie and in some instances de Lay. To the French it means a path or a pathway; the Dutch name Leh is of the same rendering. The Scotch-Irish prefix 'Mac' simply means, "son of." In some records the two names Lay and Loy were confused."

I have been finding that the surname Lay is also being confused with the surname Say in the census lists because the two letters closely resemble one another in some of the writing. If you cannot locate your family under "Lay", try running as "Say" and you might hit a match. I have also run across some instances of De Lay. That will be a separate section and be done after some of the other lines get established through 1850. You will also note that there is a huge group of Lay families in Saybrook, Connecticut. It is my belief that this is the root family for most of this line. Ancestry.com has recently added the Barbour Collection to their website. This is the town records for several Connecticut villages and is a highly important resource for information as it contains marriages, deaths and births that otherwise might not be available.

The first listing is my direct line. The second listing is a huge family from the same area and which undoubtedly are connected. Note that many of the names appear identical to other family names, but there is a major discrepancy in the dates. Throughout this line, the names re-appear in one family or the other due to naming practices and it often confuses the researcher. I'm going to alter the report format somewhat so you can see the differences better.

I have begun following this line in just the Tennessee and Kentucky areas of the census and am amazed at the sheer number of families with this surname in a very small area. I found many of them in Whitley and Scott Counties of Kentucky as well as Union County. They were in Casey and Lincoln Counties of Kentucky, etc. It is my conjecture that this family originally branched down from the Connecticut family, which appeared around the Revolutionary war and perhaps before and which moved all over the country thereafter. Look also at the third Nancy--Nancy Salina Lay--from 1850, who one researcher has traced back to England from Salt Lake, via Loudoun, Virginia, which is the state in which we are now, apparently, stuck.

I found numerous mentions of intermarriages with the Stanfill family and the Baird family in other lines--names which recur in our line. There are numerous instances where cousin married cousin. To give you an idea of the volume of potential connections, look also at John Lay---all of these are from the same two-state areas and will most likely connect eventually through logging the entire census. When you hit the Civil War period, we are looking for them to expand to Alabama, Texas, Arkansas and other Southern areas as they appear to have preferred the Southern states.

I understand there are plans in the works for a new Lay family reunion next year. If even a small percentage of the living generations were to show up from the Kentucky and Tennessee lines, this would be one mighty huge shindig. One last comment re names. . .when you are looking at potential nicknames, try to think of the full name because sometimes they are used interchangeably in the census. Some instances of this are Sally/Sarah (Sarah is usually the correct one. Thursy/Thursey/Thurzy is a brief form of Theresa. Polly is usually Mary. Eliza/ Liz/Betsy/ Betty are all forms of Elizabeth. I have found Jinsey and Jane used interchangeably so assume one is the pet name for the other. Look for middle names being used in place of first names. My aunt was named Myrtle Maude Ruth, but she went for Ruth her entire life as she hated the other nicknames. My grandfather was James Ercel Roy. He interchangeably went by Jim or Ercel. Also, cite your sources wherever possible. That way, when we need to go back and prove a point, we know where to look. Many researchers just take someone else's findings and assume they are correct and pass the errors on to others. If you photocopy a page from a book, photocopy also the face page of the book and make a note what library you found it in on the off-chance you might have accidentally missed a page or need to look it up again.

30. 1880 minutes of the West Union Association of United Baptists, "Elder Michael Lay Sr. was born December the 25th 1823 and died December 14th, 1979. He made a profession of faith in Christ about the year 1859; entered the ministry the fourth Saturday of July, 181, and was a consistent member of the United Baptist Church at Union Church for about twenty years. He was ever ready to follow after the Savior in the path of duty, and a great and efficient teacher of others to do likewise, and his Christian character was such as those knowing him should try to emulate. He died of gastro-enteritis, after a lingering and painful illness of about nine months, when he passed away in the full triumph of faith. Such was his life and his death that we feel assured his spirit is with the Savior, and that his body will come up in the first resurrection. As a neighbor, he was unsurpassed in benevolence; as a husband and father, he was kind; as a minister, he was a true teacher and defender of the doctrine of Christ and the Baptist faith. In his death Union Church lost her most able teacher; West Union Association her most efficient Moderator and instructor. All should mourn his loss, and the bereaved wife, children and relatives have our sympathy; but our great loss is his eternal gain."
