The name Cunningham in Ireland was brought to the country by settlers from Scotland who arrived into Ulster Province during the seventeenth century. The native Gaelic O'Connagain and MacCuinneagain Septs adopted Cunningham as the anglicized form of their name. There are a number of variants including Counihan and Conaghan. |

Since the majority of this line is pre-1850s and therefore, are unavailable for census validation, I am pretty much at a stop. James and Mary appear in the 1850 Census in District 26, Hancock County, West Virginia with daughter, Catherine and Catherine's husband, William Lutes (Note: Census spelling is incorrect. They show it as Loots.). Also shows baby, John Cunningham Lutes. The Lutes left West Virginia and traveled to Illinois and ultimately ended up in Central City, Nebraska, where that branch of the line ends. Mary's parents are currently unknown. |
