Catherine Cravens.  Born 4 December 1861

Charles Craven, 13th child of Sir William Craven and Mary. He was born in 1682 and died 26 December 1754. He married Elizabeth Staples. They had the following children:

  1. Charles Craven
  2. John Craven
  3. Robert Craven
  4. Elizabeth Craven

Charles was constituted governor of Carolina in the reign of Queen Anne in 1712 as replacement for Gov. Tynte. He was already in Carolina and had been appointed Secretary of the Province. He participated in the fighting against the Indian uprising and the massacre of St. Bartholomew's. Upon the death of his brother, Anthony, in England, he was given permission to return to England, which he did 25 April 1716.

Hannah Cravens, 1st child of William Cravens and Jean Harrison of Virginia..  Married William Shanks.
Hannah Cravens, second child of John Cravens and his wife Margaret was born in 1762.  Died:  November 01, 1841 in Augusta County, West Virginia.  She married Jonathan Evans in June of 1779 in Rockingham County, Virginia.  . Children:  James C., William, Jonathan A.,  Robert H., John, Evan,  Hannah and Margaret Ann.  Hannah Evans lived with her children after the death of her husband and is buried in the Meadowcreek Cemetery with Samuel and Margaret.  Children:  James C., William, Jonathan A., Robert H. John, Evan, Hannah and Margaret Ann.


Will of Hannah Evans:

I, Hanna Evans of the county of Greene and state of Tennessee do hereby make my last will and Testiment in manner and form following that is 

1st- I desire that after my death all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid.
2nd - I will and bequeath to my son John Evans one dollar
3rd - I will and bequeath to my son Evan Evans one dollar
4th I will and bequeath to my son Robert Evans one dollar
5th I will and bequeath to my son Jonathon Evans one dollar

Henry Craven was the son of William Craven and Beatrix. He married a woman by the last name of Sherwin. This would be in the late 1500s. He resided at Appletreewich and had three sons. They are:

James Cravens, sixth child of John Cravens and Margaret Hiatt, was born 12 April, 1773. He died in 1821. He married Ann (Nancy) Love in 1797 (daughter of Thomas Love of Tennessee) He removed before marriage to Green County Tennessee and then to Selma Alabama. It is thought Hannah was visiting them when she met and married Jonathan Evans.
James Cravens, born:  April 12, 1773 in Augusta County, Virginia.  Died:  1821 in Selma, Alabama.  6th child of John Cravens and Margaret Hiatt.  Married Ann Nancy Love 1797 in Greene County, Tennessee.  Children:  Mary, Margaret, Elizabeth, Sarah, Ann, Dorothy, Martha and Robert.
James Cravens, 1745. Died 1795 in Christian County, Kentucky.  Father:  Joseph Cravens.  Married:  Mary Gilliham (1750-1863) in 1765.  Children:  Elijah, Abraham, Robert, George, Betsy and William Henry.
James Harrison, born:  1802 in Rockingham, Virginia.  Died:  February 1895. Buried in Ripley County, Indiana.  5th child of Joseph Cravens and Mary Nickel.  Married:  Sophia Capito.  Children:  James William, Joseph Robert, John Oscar, John Kenney, Amanda Medora, and Junius Edward.

John Craven, fourth child of Sir William Craven and Mary Clapman. He was born in November 23, 1673 and died in December 06, 1726. He married Maria R. Green. They had the following children:

John Craven, born abt 1694 first child of John Craven and Maria R. Green. He married Mary Hickes. They had one son, Sir William Craven, 6th Lord who married Lady Elizabeth Berkeley.  

John Lord Craven Baron of Ryton, second brother to William Earl Craven. Died in 1707. Youngest son of Thomas Craven of Appletreewick near Skipton in Craven, County, York. His epitaph reads:

"Under this Weaping marble lyes the body of Sir William Craven of Winwick, Kt., youngest son of Thomas Craven of Appletreewick near Skipton in Craven in the County of Yorke, and of Margaret his wife. He was the grandson by the father's side of Anthony Craven; He was the grandson by the mother's side of Robert Craven; He was the great grandson by the father's side of William Craven and the great grandson by the mother's side of Henry Craven; which Henry Craven was brother to Sir William Craven, Kt., twice Lord Mayor of the City of London, which Lord Mayer was the father of William, late Earl of Craven and of Elizabeth Baroness of Powis, and of Mary Lady Coventry, Baroness of Aylesborough, The said Earl of Craven never married."

John Cravens, second child of Joseph Cravens and Mary Harrison, was born in 1722 in Sussex, Delaware. He married Margaret Hiatt in 1778 in Fisher Springs, Virginia.

During the revolution, Margaret furnished supplies to the army. John and Margaret had seven children:

Cravens vs. Lanahan--O. S. 291; N. S. 103--Bill by William, Joseph, James Cravens, Peggy (Cravens), wife of Joseph Snap, children of John Cravens, who died 25th July, 1778, intestate, leaving widow Margaret and seven children, viz: Mary, Hannah, Robert, William, Joseph, James and Peggy. Administration was granted to widow and Robert Cravens, brother of John. Margaret married Dennis Lanahan. Robert Cravens, Jr., came of age about fall of 1785. He was 14 years old at death of his father, and died 10th December, 1793, intestate, unmarried and without issue. Dennis made his will, giving a legacy to his brother Timothy. Dennis and Margaret were married 20th March, 1782. William Cravens was born 20th April, 1764; Joseph, 20th May, 1769; James, 12th April, 1773; Margaret, 26th August, 1775. Dennis says his nephew came in from Ireland, which caused him to alter his will. Robert Cravens, Sr., was seldom at home during the Revolution. William Cravens was Dennis's apprentice as mason. James was put to brick making in Staunton, but was afterwards taken to Kentucky by a relation and never returned. Administration on estate of Robert Cravens granted in Rockingham, 27th April, 1784, to Hester Cravens, the widow, and Benj. Smith, 13th September, 1816. John Ewing, aged 76 or 77 years, deposes, Wm. Sir William Craven 1550-1616 married Elizabeth, daughter of Wm. Whittmore. Sir William was the third son of William of Appletreewick and Sheriff of London in 1601 and Lord Mayor in 1611, under the reign of Queen Elizabeth and James I, respectively. He possessed a vast fortune. He was educated at Trinity College, Oxford. Sir William and Elizabeth had two daughters and three sons.

Sir William Craven of Lenchwick, second son of Robert Craven and Mary Brockden was born in 1610 and died in 1665. He married Mary, daughter of Ferdinand, Lord Viscount Fairfax. They had a daughter, Elizabeth Craven, who married Theophilus Leigh Esq.
William Craven, called Sir William of Winwick, eldest son of Sir William Craven was the First Baron and Only Earl (1608-1697).He was knighted at Newmarket, March 4, 1626 for his efforts in Germany and the Netherlands under Henry, Prince of Orange. He was an ardent supporter of King Charles and for this upon restoration of Charles to the throne, was advanced to Viscount, lord Craven, of Ussington, county Berks and later to Earl Craven, of Craven, county of York. He was appointed one of the Lord Proprietors, granting the province of the Carolinas, which gave name to Craven County, South Carolina 1674) and Craven County, North Carolina. The province was later divided into three counties...Berkley, Craven County and Colleton County.

Sir William Craven, first child of Sir William Craven and Mary Clapham. (1668-1711) He was the third Lord.  He married Elizabeth, daughter of Humberston Skipwith, Esq. They had the following children:

Sir William was elected Lord Palatine of the Province of Carolina in 1708, during the reign of Queen Anne. He died at Combe-Abbey in Warwickshire. His wife died in childbirth of the fourth son. Sir Fulwar Skipwith was admitted to the Board of Proprietors as guardian to Lord Craven's son, his Successor, also William lord Craven, who was then an infant.  In 1732, William, Robert and John came to America. Robert settled in Pennsylvania, John located in Randolph County, South Carolina.
