Catherine Carr was born 5 November 1846 in County Kerry, Ireland. Her parents were Richard Carr and Joanna Welsh. She always claimed to have lived at
Ahalahana, County Kerry, Ireland. We later found this to be the name of the farm and not an actual town. It is near the Rings of Kerry just a short distance from the River Shannon. The name
"Ahalahana" means "The bridge over the water" (source of definition was Dr. Edward McLysaght, former head of the Irish Archives and member of the Irish Genealogical Society, Dublin Castle, Ireland.. I had the
privilege of corresponding with him when he was retired and in his 90s.).
Ahalahana is the name of an area of land (805 acres) in the parish of Murken, County Kerry, near the village of Neutonsander and in the county district of Listowel, Ireland.
She is known to have come over with her son, Johnny as we have the immigration record. According to my grandmother, Gladys Catherine Lutes, her grandmother came to America with a cousin and his wife but their names are unknown. They went somewhere down south. She was supposedly married in Ireland to a first cousin, who died in her arms. She married David Osborne, a divorcee, on 7 April, 1867 (I have a copy of the license.) They were married in Maquoketa, Jackson County, Iowa. After the death of David Osborne, she again married. Her third husband was Moses Michael Kanouse, who fought with the Union Army in the Civil War.
They had one daughter together, named Pearl. He lived to the ripe old age of 95 and was written up in the local papers as having marched in review before President Lincoln.
Catherine is also shown as Katherine. She died 6 June 1914 in Omaha Nebraska of a cerebral
hemorrhage (that's the way it's spelled on the death certificate.)
My grandmother, Catherine Lutes, told of one story her mother passed down to her in which she stated that Catherine Carr used to walk to the village of
Murher in County Kerry to make lace collars for the priest. On one occasion, she bought a bonnet with a
flower on it. Her father felt the bonnet was unnecessarily frivolous and tore it off her head and buried it. He supposedly told her to water the hat and see if the flower would grow.
Catherine Carr on the home farm. Catherine came from Alhalahana,
County Kerry, Ireland, with her infant son, Johnny. She married
David Osborn, a divorcee, in Iowa about the time of the Civil War.
After his death, she married Moses Michael Kanouse. See below for
her history. She was a devout churchwoman and it was said that
because of her experience during the Irish famine, she made sure that no
one ever walked away from her door hungry.
She is known to have had at least two sisters, who were nuns. She also had two known brothers, one of whom was a doctor and one of whom was a priest. When she was on her deathbed she had my grandmother write a letter to her sister, who was supposedly a Mother
Superior in a convent, in which she told them she had been received back in the Catholic Church in good graces and asking them to grant her forgiveness in her death. She received a letter back telling her the family had no sister named Catherine. She was written off the family Bible and never granted the forgiveness she so badly wanted when she died. How sad it is that there are those who do not have it in their hearts to forgive, but since I don't know the reasoning behind all that occurred, I suppose I shouldn't judge. Still, it seems rather heartless to refuse a deathbed wish when the person to whom that wish was applied was supposedly a devout Christian.
During her lifetime, Catherine as an active member of the Methodist Church in her home town and a member of their altar guild. It was said she never let a person go hungry who came to her door to ask for help because, having lived through the potato famine, she had
a horror of seeing someone else die from starvation.
Source of information: Civil War pension records of David Osborn; Census records; Cemetery plot census; Marriage record; Death Certificate; Dr. Edward McLysaght, former head of the Irish Archives.
Catherine was a member of the St. Paul de Neri Catholic church at the time of her death and died in good standing with the church and had a Catholic burial

| James Carr, son of Richard Carr and Joanna Welsh

| John Carr. First husband of Catherine
Carr. According to the 1850 census of County Kerry, Ireland, this has to have been her first cousin. It would have been considered a mortal sin to marry a first cousin and this is why her family disowned her and her child.
I have father's name in my records, but have not entered them
yet. According to the Civil War records, John died in
Ireland before Catherine came to America with their only son,
Johnny. (See below) John's father is said to have been
Richard. Date of death per Civil War pension filed by Catherine is
March 07, 1865 in County Kerry, Ireland. (further

Johnny W. Carr, son of Catherine Carr and purportedly a first cousin by the name of
Richard Carr. . He was most assuredly the reason his mother was kicked out of the family back in
Ireland, per my grandmother, Gladys Lutes and her sister Ruth
Wright, who were his contemporaries. He came with her to America (per the immigration records) and was adopted informally or otherwise, by his stepfather, David Osborn. Although he is buried under the name of John Osborn, that was, as far as we know, never his name legally. It also states on his death certificate that he was born in Iowa, but the records
indicate otherwise. (both Grandma and Aunt Ruth said he came with
her to America as an infant. His death certificate says he was 72 years, 7 months and 8 days old when he died. His date of death was 2 Aug 1936, so that would put his date of birth at 25 December 1867 if I calculated correctly.
. His sister was the one who gave the information. My aunt always said she had not much use for him because he was a bit lazy.
According to Aunt Ruth, Johnny took the name of his stepfather,
David Osborn, as David was the only father he ever knew. His only occupation, when he did anything at all per Aunt Ruth, was that of a laborer. He was buried in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska.
According to the death certificate, he was with a woman by the
name of Lulu when he died. He is known to have played the mouth harp. Lived at 16th and
Leavenworth in a small apt. Died of Spinal Meningitis.
Johnny died in the poor house. Possibly Lulu was a caretaker
there.

Richard Carr of county Kerry, Ireland, was a person of some political stature in that he actually is listed on the Irish Census, a census that was reserved for land owners. Since most people during that period of time were not allowed to own land, he had to have either money or political connections. There was one other known brother living in the area at that time and it was the brother's son who appears to be the father of Johnny Carr, Catherine's son. Richard was married to Joanna Walsh according to Dr. McLysaght, former head of the Irish Archives. Theirs was one of the few family record that still resides in the parish church and not in the Irish Genealogy Society archives in Dublin Castle.
According to Dr. McLysaght, the name Carr was not common to this part of Ireland, but rather was more common further north. He also stated that Walsh, as a surname, originated from people who came from Wales. This was the Irish designation of Welsh people living in
Ireland. Dr. McLysaght has written many authoritative books on Irish surnames and genealogy and was considered an expert on the subject. He also had a keen sense of humor even in his later years. He once sent me half an Irish Sweeps ticket with the understanding we would share the money and get a chance to meet if we won. We didn't so I
sent him his own Mickey Mouse ears hat with his name on it as thanks. I never did find out what his response to that was...but I digress.
