Revised 30 September 2008
| What I am going to attempt here is to give you the
words of the text in Latin and in English and then create an explanation of each piece
using some citations from the participants and from experts in the field to make the words
more meaningful to the neophyte. The music of Bach speak for itself, but Bach has a
few tricks up his sleeve for us that are hidden in his music. If you aren't watching
for it, you miss an important aspect of Bach's Mass. I'll give a brief over-view of Bach's life here, but will not attempt to write a history of his work as others have done so many times before and they are far more knowledgeable on the subject than am I. If you wish to read more about the life and times of Johann Sebastian Bach, there are a number of books available through my bookstore. In covering the text and music itself, I want to cite several sources published on the internet, including the great article by Timothy A Smith, and will include some comments from the performers, those who work behind the scenes and friends. Rather than cite Mr. Smith directly, I will create a link over to his site so you can read the article for yourself as he has written an extensive evaluation of this work and gives some marvelous insight into the musical magic that Bach creates. Please use your back arrow to return to this cite where links do not exist or do not yet work. "Bach's music has lasted all these years because he gave God all the glory for his musical gifts.. At the bottom of each sacred work are the words-SOLI DEO GLORIA- to God be the glory." - Grace Arrowood, music teacher, West Virginia |
